Happy New Year

Happy New Year and Happy Cycling from Free Wheel North.

2012 promises to be an exciting year for us. With new storage at the Green our fleet of bikes is getting bigger. We now have a beautiful side by side hand crank tandem and go cart -style bikes on the way.

Lots of groups including Deaf Blind Scotland as still braving the elements and coming down for rides – despite the cold the sun has been shining plenty – what better way to spend the day than out for a ride in the park?

Our led rides are off to a good start in the spring, with sessions planned in partnership with:

Harvest South Event

Our first harvest ride to Urban Roots in Toryglen was enjoyed by us all, loads of lovely free food was cooked up by some brilliant chefs and the Arran cheese stall. Which was a big hit with Alec.

We rode the rickshaw around and picked up some punters who weren’t going to let us off without some serious pedal work!

A great day with live music, a puppet show and freshly pressed apple juice – what more could we ask for!

Roll on next Saturday when the next Harvest ride takes us up to Kennyhill allotments for more fresh food and cycling.

Get in touch if you want to join us.

Green Streets Toryglen

Free Wheel North took part in Green Streets Toryglen on Sunday, a fun day of games, workshops and information about making sustainable transport alternatives possible for everyone.

Two groups rode over, one from Baillieston and another from Glasgow Green to join in fun and sample the great lunch provided by Urban Roots. Highlights included the Clydeside Horse rides, Pedal powered smoothies and the amazing 7 seater conference bike.

Free Wheel North also took part in a community transport discussion with a Strathclyde Passenger Transport representative, a green councillor and a number of people from Toryglen with great ideas for improving public transport and conditions for cyclists.

Thanks to all at Urban Roots and all the ride leaders and young people for making it a great day.

Save The Accord Campaign

The Accord is a day care facility in the East End of Glasgow that supports more than one hundred and twenty children and adults with severe learning disabilities. It is going to be demolished to make way for a car park for the Commonwealth Games. Service-users and carers were promised an equivalent centre would be built when the Commonwealth Games were announced. This promise is not being fulfilled.

The carers at the Accord centre alongside local residents, campaigners and the service users themselves have launched an inspirational campaign to demand that either the Accord stays open or a like for like replacement is given.

Free Wheel North were asked by service users come to our Cycling Centre on Glasgow Green if we could bring our adapted bikes up the the Save the Accord Campaign demonstration which marched through the East End on Saturday the 27th of August.

Over 500 people attended, including a brilliant samba band, and there was enormous local support for the campaign.

Freewheel North Cycling Jersey

The FWN is the main sponsor of GRCM a cycling club/group set up to promote cycling in Glasgow for adults. The club/group has been going well and in the last three months it has reached 84 members with over 25 rides done! However there is still very much to do.

It is hoped that the cycling club/group will be more open to adults with fair cycling fitness because at the moment a good/moderate level of fitness is required. We are looking for people to get involved and hope we can arrange cycling outings of all levels to everyone. We have over 12 members doing the Pedal for Scotland! So we know that the demand is there, we just need people/members to get involved more.

In wanting to promote the club/group and the FWN we have developed and designed a cycle jersey with Impsport UK. The jersey will be available to all GRCM members and all FWN staff and volunteers.

If you like we would be happy to supply you with a cycle jersey to support the FWN. The cost will be around £45, please contact us for more information.
